Enjoy a relaxing day cruising Lake Barkley and admire the most picturesque scenery in the American Heartland as you bask in the comfort of the most modern American Riverboat on the Mississippi. From large, wonderful windows and your private balcony, gaze at the everchanging views of the river valley and marvel at the ship’s transit through locks and dams. As avid river cruisers, we were looking forward to our American Cruise Lines Tennessee River cruise for months. It was a well-organized and scenic trip with a wonderful balance of time in ports and time sailing. We saw parts of America we likely never would have otherwise visited and joyfully interacted with the American Serenade river cruise ship crew and fellow guests. Board your ship and enjoy a leisurely day winding through the Appalachian Mountains as we follow the river through stunning landscapes.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park
American’s eight-day Tennessee River Cruises will operate again in 2024, cruising and even longer season from May to early November. There's something eerie and dramatic about hearing crickets and frogs and gosh-knows-what at night along the Tennessee river, while thunder rolls in the distance and dark storm clouds build up dramatically over the lit, cozy interior of the ship. Enjoy the idyllic countryside of the Ohio River and the wonder of the mighty Mississippi that inspired Mark Twain. The Ohio River was pivotal in the development and exploration of the American West and along the way we highlight much that has defined our American roots from the Civil War to bluegrass music.
Day 1: Chattanooga, Tennessee
As you begin your amazing journey, be treated to the entertainment of our onboard musicians and the camaraderie of fellow guests and crew. Cruise aboard the newest riverboats in the region and enjoy perfect comfort and modern amenities as you travel to each historical destination. The fabric of the region is brought to life through our delicious regional cuisine, great onboard music, and customized excursions to historical landmarks.
Nashville, TN to Knoxville, TN
Discover some of America’s natural beauty on a Tennessee River cruise. The river’s name is believed to be a derivation of the 18th-century Cherokee village, Tanasi, that was formed upon its banks. The new cruises stop in Decatur, AL; Florence, AL; Savannah, TN; Paducah, KY; and also sail the Cumberland River, exploring Lake Barkley and the Land Between the Lakes, the company said.
Onboard Entertainment
The walk from the hotel to the riverfront is only around 10 minutes, but with people’s luggage, walkers, and the Tennessee heat, nearly everyone opted to climb onboard for the short ride. Though we didn’t take the transfers offered to or from the airport at the beginning and end of the cruise, we did the pre-cruise hotel stay in Chattanooga. Embarkation day transfers to the ship were seamless and well organized. Nothing quite blew us away, but there were certainly meals we enjoyed, and we were never hungry, with multiple snacking and eating options throughout the day. Residing at the confluence of the Tennessee River and the Ohio River, Paducah will make you feel as if you stepped back in time. Founded by William Clark (of Lewis and Clark), Paducah is known as a National Heritage Destination with many talented culinary artists, painters, potters, and jewelers creating and displaying their works there.
Enjoy a special welcome reception at the hotel to get to know fellow explorers. Discover Clarksville, named for General George Rogers Clark, a frontier fighter, Revolutionary War hero, and brother of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. As you explore the city led by our local guides, learn how Clarksville rose as a major tobacco port during the 1800s.
Quite a few passengers signed up for this excursion; we were just shy of 50 guests on the trip. After the coach bus was loaded and ready to go from the port, a National Park Ranger joined us. She was enthusiastic, incredibly knowledgeable and engaging, sharing information about the area and the Civil War era as the bus drove us to our destinations. We had time to go there after our Civil War battlefields excursion; the museum was worth the minutes, and the entrance for all American Cruise Line guests was complimentary. Chairs were set up in between sections of the wall and the prayer circle for the visiting cruise guests. We sat amongst the trees and stones as Tom’s son explained his family history and about the stones that comprised the wall, which is the largest unmortared wall in the United States.
Day 7: Paducah, KY
The lively streets are lined with art galleries and unique shops that welcome you at every turn and the sounds of talented performers hoping for stardom echo from every pub. Wander along the landing to admire more than 50 murals which highlight the region’s rich history. Learn the importance of the town as headquarters for Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant as he embarked to secure Union control of the rivers. Only a block away, the excellent River Discovery Center illuminates for you the importance of the rivers to this historic port.
Mississippi River Cruises
We opted to climb the stairs to see the top of the sacred mound, but most guests did not because of the climb. A few couples were in their 40s and 50s, like us, with the majority of guests between 60 to 80 years old. During our cruise, there were about 110 guests, whereas the guest capacity of the ship is around 180 passengers.
View a treasure trove of incredible works of art created with fabric, needle, and thread at the National Quilt Museum. We embarked on American Serenade river cruise ship for the journey from Chattanooga to Nashville, Tennessee itinerary. The itinerary is open-jaw, which is cruise-speak for a journey that starts in one city and ends in another, as opposed to a closed-jaw itinerary which starts and ends in the same port.
Be entertained on board by local musicians as you enjoy the afternoon rolling on the mighty Mississippi. This site focuses on small-format cruises and ship-within-a-ship concepts on large cruise ships, including special cruise experiences you can enjoy during your next vacation. We also enjoyed onboard lectures for a little while, say on our balcony, and toasted with Prosecco as the ship pulled into port with the Nashville skyline in the background as the summer sunset. Others played games like Rummikub that was onboard or completed a puzzle in one of the lounges. We admit that at first, we thought, “Meh, a quilting museum…” but we ran into some fellow cruisers while taking photos by the riverwalk flood wall, which has beautiful handpainted murals on them, and they raved about the museum.
From the legendary Grand Ole Opry to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Nashville is the official headquarters of country music. The lively streets are lined with art galleries and unique shops that welcome you at every turn. Take time to explore historic downtown, including the famous Country Music Hall of Fame Museum and Honky Tonk Row.

The cruise includes a range of excursions such as visits to Shiloh National Military Park in Savannah, the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville and the National Quilt Museum in Paducah. Also available are active outdoor excursions like an ATV backcountry adventure in Chattanooga and a visit to The Shoals where participants can golf 18 holes at the Robert Trent Jones golf course. 2023 cruises will operate this June through August aboard three of the company’s five Mississippi riverboats, including newly christened American Serenade.
However, we did hear from multiple people on the cruise that it was disappointing for a few reasons, namely that the desserts were not up to par with expectations and that the sunset is truly weather dependent. Unfortunately, the day we were in town, it was overcast and rainy, and the guests who signed up for the excursion couldn’t enjoy a picturesque sunset because of that. Some excursions are included in each port, and some are an additional charge.

We were able to tour the Ryman in the morning and go to the Country Music Hall of Fame after. The Ryman Auditorium tour was an additional cost, but the Country Music Hall of Fame is included for all guests. There were quilting squares, museum shirts, postcards, jewelry, ceramic items, and more inside for anyone wanting to remember their visit to Paducah with a souvenir.
Along with Civil War history, music-inspired cities, and incredible southern cuisine, you will cruise the CumberlandRiver through the Tennessee River Gorge and be amazed by thesights and sounds this region has to offer. On this remarkable journey from Memphis to Nashville, experience the power of the Mississippi River, the grandeur of the Ohio River, and the beauty of the Cumberland River. Each waterway offers unique scenery with rolling hills, steep bluffs, soaring bald eagles, regal blue herons, fascinating historical sites, and sunsets reflecting on the water in indescribable beauty. The other option for the evening was a Sunset 360 – Dessert, Cocktails & Views excursion.
