The rights to The Last House on the Left were picked up by Rogue Pictures in 2006, with the remake being the first film produced by Craven's newly formed studio Midnight Pictures. Craven, who wrote and directed the original film, was interested to see what kind of film could be made on a larger budget, as the limited funds forced him to remove scenes he had wanted to film to tell a complete story. One of the elements Iliadis wanted to avoid with the film, given its graphic nature, was turning it into "torture porn".

Not many unseasoned audience members will find the 2009 rape scene "toned down," and indeed I found it painful to watch. In the 2005 film, it was so reprehensibly and lingeringly sadistic, I found it unforgivable. So now my job as a film critic involved grading rape scenes. Over the years, The Last House on the Left has gained a reputation that’s as queasily polarized as its own swings between savage violence and slapstick comedy. On the one hand, it’s a high-minded debasement of Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring, as much a throbbing counterculture hangover as the Rolling Stones’ Altamont documentary Gimme Shelter was two years before.

Many different versions of the film exist on various DVD and VHS releases struck from different cuts of the film, many of them from different countries. The gang finds photos of Mari and realizes it is her home. Later, when Junior is in the midst of heroin withdrawal, Estelle enters the bathroom to check on him and sees Mari's peace symbol necklace around his neck. She finds blood-soaked clothing in their luggage and overhears them talking about Mari's death and her disposal in a nearby lake. The parents accidentally find out the identities of the killers, because of a stolen locket and some blood-stained clothing in their baggage. Enraged, the father takes on the gang single-handedly and murders them. Setting aside the modern details, this is roughly the plot of Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring."
